Student, 15, Shot in Confrontation
A 15-year-old San Fernando High School student was shot in the hand Wednesday during a confrontation between two groups of youths near campus, authorities said.
The injured boy was taken to Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, where he was in good condition, said San Fernando police spokesman Lt. Rico Castro.
Police detained four youths for questioning. A Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson said the suspects included a freshman at Sylmar High School, a sophomore from Kennedy High School in Granada Hills and a third boy who attends an alternative school.
The incident is the second shooting near San Fernando High in recent months. In October, a 17-year-old student was shot and seriously wounded near the campus, raising security questions.
Castro said the shooting was reported around 3:30 p.m. when a group of four San Fernando High students were confronted by eight other youths while walking near Fox Street and O’Melveny Avenue.
Police recovered a handgun after the shooting, which they believe is gang related, Castro said.
