More than 400 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Aliso Creek on Wednesday, spurring Orange County Health officials to close the beaches surrounding the river outlet until the water clears up.

The spill occurred when a sewage line in Leisure World, a gated community in Laguna Woods, became blocked and then ruptured, according to Monica Mazur, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Health Care Agency.

All water 150 feet north and south of Aliso Creek is off-limits to swimmers. The water has to test clean for two consecutive days before the beach reopens, Mazur said.
