Davis Cup May Be Coming to L.A.
If the United States beats Zimbabwe next month at Harare, Zimbabwe, in the first round of the Davis Cup, the quarterfinals probably will be played at either the Great Western Forum or UCLA’s Los Angeles Tennis Center, according to sources.
The quarterfinal opponent April 7-9 will be Britain or the Czech Republic. Britain must play its first-round match at Ostrava, Czech Republic, and may be without one of its top players, Greg Rusedski, who is recovering from an operation on his right foot.
The United States must get past Zimbabwe, Feb. 4-6, at the Harare City Sports Center. John McEnroe will be making his debut as captain in the first U.S. Davis Cup match in Africa.
The site decision for the quarterfinals is expected to be made in the next 7-10 days. One factor is whether Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras would prefer to play indoors at the Forum or outdoors at UCLA.
