A 10-year-old Buena Park boy on an off-road outing with his father died Sunday when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed, officials said.

Kyle Doiron was riding in Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area when he crashed his Honda 80. His father, Mark, 41, was on a motorcycle nearby, Supervising Ranger Rick DiMassimo said.

Park rangers and California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the cause of the crash, but DiMassimo said it appears the boy hit a rock and lost control.

“He had everything, full riding protection,” he said. “Helmet, kneepads, riding pants, chest protectors, goggles--about everything a rider could have.”

Rangers administered first aid while waiting 40 minutes for paramedics from Salton City in Imperial County, DiMassimo said. Kyle was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for early in the week.

The desert park straddles Imperial and San Diego counties about 90 miles east of San Diego and draws more than 300,000 off-road enthusiasts between October and late May to its 70,000 acres of trails.
