Suspect Held in Rape of Girl, 12
Police have taken a suspect into custody in the rape of a 12-year-old girl Wednesday, and prosecutors say they will decide today whether they have sufficient evidence to file criminal charges.
Neither the Los Angeles Police Department nor the district attorney’s office would provide the name of the suspect or further information. They said an announcement might be made in the case later today.
Investigators believe the suspect broke into the girl’s apartment before dawn--shortly after her mother left for work--and raped and terrorized the girl at knifepoint for as long as an hour.
A neighbor heard a scream but directed police to the wrong address. Police found the girl about an hour and a half later after her mother called 911.
