University Wrestlers Rally to Beat Estancia

Heavyweight Galen Duckles won a decision against Josh Veach in the final match to give University a 35-33 victory over Estancia in a Pacific Coast League wrestling meet Thursday at University.

The Trojans (9-4, 1-0) trailed by seven points with two matches remaining, but Francisco Gamboa, ranked third in the county at 189 pounds, recorded a pin in the 215-pound division to pull University within one point. Duckles then defeated Veach, 3-0.

In another Pacific Coast League meet:

Corona del Mar 51, Costa Mesa 30--The Sea Kings (1-1 in league) won their first league dual meet in more than six years.

In the Empire League:

No. 8 Loara 46, Kennedy 19--Josh Galvan, Joe Ellis and Fernando Magana won by pin to lead Loara (2-1 in league).

In the Garden Grove League:

Los Amigos 57, Pacifica 12--Los Amigos avenged an earlier loss to Pacifica (3-2 in league), highlighted by a 24-second pin in the heavyweight division by Calvin Green over Trent Dennis.

In the Golden West League:

No. 2 Santa Ana 68, Westminster 0--Santa Ana (7-2, 3-0) won six matches by forfeit and heavyweight Ed Arvizo pinned his opponent in 19 seconds.

In the Serra League:

Santa Margarita 84, Playa del Rey St. Bernard 0--Chris Hageman pinned Julien Cox 39 seconds into their 152-pound match. The Eagles (7-5, 1-2) won 10 matches by forfeit and four by falls.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 48, Trabuco Hills 19--Matt McCullough won a 4-2 decision in overtime at 171 pounds for Mission Viejo.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 50, Fountain Valley 18--Travis Monson (132) won by decision, 17-0, for Esperanza (20-6, 3-0). Host Fountain Valley falls to 1-2 in league.

In Freeway League girls’ water polo:

Buena Park 7, La Habra 2--Alissa Walker scored four goals and Kelli Britton two for Buena Park (8-9, 3-2). Host La Habra drops to 2-12, 0-5.

Sonora 8, Sunny Hills 3--Laura McNabb and Sam Arnold each scored three goals for Sonora (12-4, 4-1). Host Sunny Hills is 9-10, 2-3.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 9, Valencia 7--Amber Schaefer scored three goals and Andrea Barraza and Monica Lorey each scored two for visiting Savanna (11-6, 3-1).

Stacy Yu and Janine Gay scored two goals each for Valencia (6-9, 1-2).

In the South Coast League:

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 12, Mission Viejo 4--Amber Stachowski scored six goals and sister Aimee scored three for the Cougars (9-5, 2-0) at Saddleback College.

Dana Hills 11, Trabuco Hills 5--Junior Carrie Bales scored three goals for visiting Dana Hills (5-10, 1-1).
