Korean Church Plans Praise Night

The Korean Presbyterian Church of Thousand Oaks will hold a Praise Night for youth and young adults at 7 tonight. Youth Pastor Andy Kwon will deliver a message titled “Power of Love.” The Youth Praise Team led by Tae K. Nam will lead the praise.

Interfaith Parents to Meet

A free discussion for interfaith parents is offered by Congregation B’nai Emet in Simi Valley. Interfaith parents will meet in a friendly atmosphere to discuss issues and concerns, make new friends and gain support to help them parent more effectively. Gorsline to Offer Sermon

Worship at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard begins at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Alan P. Gorsline’s sermon will be “When Your Get Up and Go Has Done Gone,” based on Jonah 3:1-5, 10. Children will attend worship service until after the “Let the Children Come” segment, then will leave for Sunday school.

Leadership Sunday Services

St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Newbury Park will have Leadership Sunday worship services from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Sunday.

The meeting will focus on the many volunteers who lead the work of the church. New leaders will be welcomed and outgoing leaders will be thanked. The Rev. Lynne Austin will deliver the message “Lead by Being Led,” focusing on Jonah 3:1-5, 10 and Mark 1:14-30.

Workshop on Parenting Skills

Simi Covenant Church provides a parenting skills workshop every fourth Tuesday of the month.

This week, the workshop will take place at the Worship Center from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and feature Phyllis Wilson, a licensed marriage and family therapist who will speak on “Building Self-Esteem in Your Children.” Nursery care is provided, and older children will be able to participate in a Super Tuesday activity.

Simi Covenant Church is offering a new worship service Sunday evenings called “The Gathering” for those who seek a different way of worshiping. The service begins at 6:30 p.m.

Theological Conference at CLU

The 19th annual Winter Break Theological Conference will be held at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday and Thursday. The theme of this year’s conference is “Prophetic Vision for a New Century.”

Theologians invited to speak at the two-day conference include Martha E. Stortz, professor of historical theology and ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley; Rabbi Judith HaLevy of Malibu Synagogue, and James Limberg, professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

Pamela Jolicoeur, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Cal Lutheran, will present the university lecture.

Living the Ten Commandments

Barbara Freedman, a family therapist and temple member, will speak on “Life’s Ten Challenges: The Ten Commandments in Everyday Life” on Friday during the Sabbath eve service at Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks.

The service begins at 8:15 p.m. and will be conducted by Rabbi Shimon Paskow, spiritual leader of the congregation. Cantor Jeff Cohen will chant the traditional Kabbalat Shabbat liturgy. After the service, everyone is welcome to the Oneg Shabbat reception in the temple social hall, where Freedman will be available to answer questions.

On Jan. 29, Shabbat services will begin at 10 a.m. Chelsea Mangel will be called to the Torah in celebration of becoming bat mitzvah. Everyone is welcome to attend kiddush after the service.

Church to Hold Arts Festival

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Thousand Oaks invites the public to its music and arts festival Jan. 29. The free festival is an evening of fellowship for the family. Displays and food tasting begin at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment at 7 p.m.

Improvisation Evening Planned

Congregation B’nai Emet’s Men’s Club in Simi Valley will sponsor an evening of improvisation and sketch comedy called “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Temple,” performed by the group Tangent from 7 to 10 p.m. Jan. 29 at the temple.

Tickets are $15 with reservations and $17.50 at the door. Refreshments will be served. Proceeds will go toward the temple’s building fund.

Artist to Offer Workshop

Liturgical artist Nancy Chinn will present a free introductory workshop on her philosophy, work and creative process in the design of sacred space from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 30 at St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village.

Chinn will demonstrate how, by using the scriptures as inspiration, art can be designed to enhance worship.

‘Love’s Spectrum’ to Be Topic

Unity Center Church will meet at the Old Meadows Park community room in Thousand Oaks at 10 a.m. Jan. 30. The Rev. Irma Oestmann will speak on “Love’s Spectrum,” with soloist Jeremy Cowin and pianist Richard Jones providing music.

Church Plans Super Bowl Party

The public is invited to a free Super Bowl bash Jan. 30 at Ojai Valley Community Church. Pregame festivities will begin at 2 p.m. at the youth center and include basketball, table games and video games. Food and drinks will be provided.

The game will be watched on two large screens.

There will also be a free pottery demonstration at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and 9:30 a.m. Feb. 6.

Michael and Pam Rozell will present their blend of music and art.

The stage will be transformed into a potter’s house as Rozell, a master potter, creates a piece of pottery while speaking about his life. Pam Rozell will provide music.

Instruction on Talmud, Hebrew

Rabbi Shimon Paskow will teach a course in the Talmud and beginning Hebrew at Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks beginning Jan. 31. The traditional evening Maarly service will be held at 7:30, followed at 8 by the course in the Talmud.

Paskow will analyze some of the passages from the Mishna and the Babylonian Gemara, known as the Babylonian Talmud.

At 8:45 p.m., Paskow will teach beginning Hebrew. No prior knowledge is required. This course will enable people to follow the Hebrew of the synagogue service and some words in modern conversational Hebrew.

The classes will continue Mondays for about six weeks. They are open to everyone. There is no charge and membership is not required. Paskow will provide the text.

On Feb. 4, Judge Bruce Einhorn will speak on “What’s Happening in Immigration” during a Sabbath Eve service at 8:15 p.m.

The service will be conducted by Paskow, and Cantor Jeff Cohen will chant the traditional Kabbalat Shabbat liturgy. After the service, everyone is welcome to the Oneg Shabbat reception in the social hall, where Einhorn will socialize and answer questions.

Einhorn is a U. S. immigration judge in Los Angeles and an Agoura Hills resident. From October 1979 until June 1990, he served as a prosecuting attorney with the U. S. Justice Department, specializing in the identification, denaturalization and deportation of Nazi war criminals who lived illegally in the United States.

Program for Inactive Catholics

Women’s Conference in Ventura

“Morality and Culture: Can Our Religious Ethics Transform Our World?” is the title of the third annual All Faiths Women of Vision Conference from 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ventura.

Irene Pinkard, vice president of the Ventura County Community College District, will speak at the opening session. Participants will choose two of 11 workshops that include “Youth Accepting Diversity,” “Teaching Children Moral Values and Character in Today’s Culture,” “Answering Ethical Dilemmas in Your Workplace,” “The Need to Talk to Each Other,” “Journalism Ethics,” “Legal Ethics,” “Ethics in Hollywood,” “Environment Responsibility” and “Ethical Dying.” The closing sermon includes gospel music, the Women of Vision Awards and an interfaith ceremony.

The sponsor is the Ventura Interfaith Ministerial Assn. The cost is $5 in advance or $7 at the door. Teenage girls are welcome at no charge.
