Changes to the speed limits on three city streets inched slowly closer to taking effect last week.

At its meeting Thursday, the City Council gave its first reading of an ordinance reducing the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on Avenida de las Flores south of Antonio Parkway; from 45 mph to 40 mph on Antonio Parkway between Elena Honesto and Marbella; and from 50 mph to 45 mph on Melinda Road between Santa Margarita Parkway and Regresso.

The ordinance will go into effect following a second reading at the council’s next meeting Aug. 3.

City staff drafted the ordinance at the council’s request following a review of a speed-limit study and recommendations submitted by the traffic engineering firm of Minagar & Associates.
