Fountain Valley’s Casey Janssen Signs to Play Baseball at UCLA

Fountain Valley pitcher/third baseman Casey Janssen has signed with UCLA, Baron Coach Ron LaRuffa said Monday.

Janssen, a Times’ Orange County first-team selection, hit .415 and led county teams with 12 home runs. His 44 RBIs were a single-season school record.

Janssen also went 7-2 on the mound.

SOCCER

Two Orange County club teams will spend this week at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla., playing in the United States Youth Soccer National Championships, the most prestigious youth soccer tournament in the country.

The Dana Point-based Southern California Blues girls’ under-16 team and the Fountain Valley Wolfpack boys’ under-18 team begin pool play today.

The Wolfpack faces a tough test when it plays FC Delco Black of West Chester, Pa., which is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the championships. FC Delco won the under-17 title in 1998. The Blues play the Internationals of Cleveland.

The top two teams from pool play will compete for the title Sunday.

MEMORABILIA

The rare T206 Honus Wagner card recently sold through an Internet auction for a record $1.265 million will be on display at the National Sports Collectors Convention, Thursday through Sunday at Anaheim Convention Center. The 1909 card was purchased last week by Santa Ana businessman Brian Seigel.

Convention hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $12 per day and children under 6 are free with a paid adult.

SWIMMING

Cory Hillis has been hired as the assistant swim coach at UC Irvine.

Hillis was an assistant at Pittsburgh the last two seasons, helping the Panthers win two Big East titles. He has also been an assistant at Princeton. He will work with the men’s and women’s teams.

WATER POLO

Marina High has hired Johnny Bega as boys’ water polo coach.

Bega, who coaches the Long Beach Shore age-group teams and was the girls’ coach at Long Beach Millikan High last season, takes over for Drew Netherton, who coached both the boys’ and girls’ teams last year. He is the Vikings’ third coach in three years.
