Restoration of a park slope that was damaged in 1998 during El Nino storms is expected to begin later this year.

The City Council voted last week to approve a $14,500 contract with Costa Mesa-based Petra Geotechnical Inc. to test and study the soil, then prepare plans to repair a section of the slope at Crown Valley Community Park that slid during the heavy rains.

The total cost of the slope project is estimated at $336,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state Office of Emergency Services will pay more than half of that bill. The city’s portion will be about $142,000.

The damaged area of the slope, which measures about 450 feet by 30 feet, is next to the park’s upper soccer field. Several homes on Stillwater Lane sit along the top of the slope.

The city is expected to take bids for the construction phase in early October.
