The Southern California Assn. of Governments determined the city needs at least 700 more houses, townhomes and apartments in the next five years, but city officials say the projection is unrealistic and unreachable.
Laguna Niguel officials are appealing the Regional Housing Needs Assessment numbers handed down in October by the association.
“They’re pie-in-the-sky numbers that have no bearing on reality,” said senior city planner Stephen Higa.
The housing figures are part of a study mandated by SCAG and the state Department of Housing and Community Development. The final draft of the housing report is due June 30, but Higa said an extension is being considered.
Laguna Niguel, which became a city in 1989, has added about 500 homes since 1998, he said.
