Still a Dark and Stormy Knight

It is not Bob Knight that should be our object of interest: It is his supporters who feed off his hatred and anger. It is obvious to these supporters that a majority of African American families will not subject their children to his potential victimization.

In the eyes of Knight’s admirers his most recent noteworthy accomplishment is that he features white players. It is the bigotry that Knight generates, not his behavior, which should be of concern.

Yes, these “Lords of Discipline” are out of step with America today. Today, we are like a shipload of revelers that are so stoned that we don’t see that our ship has no rudder and that we are heading toward the rocks.

Lombardi, Hayes, Kush, Knight and other coaches like them--feel free to hate them and their ilk. Just make sure you don’t bet against them.

Maybe we can convince the players of these four coaches to turn in their championship rings. I wouldn’t bet on that happening, either.

The fact that a university offers a social science course in which a large part of the semester is devoted to a study of Bob Knight’s behavior disturbs me more than does Bob Knight’s behavior.
