Oscar Finder Says Most of Reward Money Stolen

The man who found stolen Oscars in a trash bin earlier this year and collected a $50,000 reward for turning them in said he lost most of it to burglars, police confirmed Saturday.

Willie Fulgear told police he had left $40,000 of the reward money, plus jewelry and other items, in a 500-pound safe in his modest Los Angeles apartment while he went house hunting in Mississippi. When he returned home Thursday, he found the apartment ransacked and the safe missing, he said.

Police were investigating the theft, which Fulgear reported early Friday.

Fulgear, 61, found 52 of 55 missing Oscars while rummaging near a Koreatown trash bin March 19, just days before the Academy Awards.
