Repaving to Stop Short of Clean Sweep

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Dear Traffic Talk:

Recently, the city paved the streets south of Rinaldi Street along Gothic Avenue and adjoining streets, such as Flanders Street and Monogram Avenue. I had assumed the city would continue on the north side because our streets have developed a lot of potholes and driving is getting really dreadful.

Can you find out if the city is planning to pave our section and if so, how soon?

Dear Rosemary:

The city is scheduled to repave several segments along Monogram and Flanders, but many portions will be south of Rinaldi, said Robert Reed, a spokesman for the city Public Works Department.

The city will repave two segments on Flanders north of Rinaldi. First, from the dead-end east of Gothic to Gothic between July 2003 and June 2004. Then from the dead-end west of Gothic to Gothic between July 2004 and June 2005.

Reed said the following portions of Monogram south of Rinaldi will be resurfaced:

* From Index to McKeever streets between July and June 2001.

* From the dead-end north of San Fernando Mission Boulevard to San Fernando Mission Boulevard between July 2001 to June 2002.

* Three segments along Monogram are scheduled for repaving from July 2009 to June 2010: From the dead-end north of Horace Street to Horace, from Tulsa Street to Jersey Street, and from Tuba Street to Mayall Street.

Dear Traffic Talk:

At about 6:45 a.m. weekday mornings, there is standing water in the intersection of Magnolia Boulevard and Willis Avenue in Sherman Oaks. This situation creates a traffic hazard because vehicles swerve or brake to avoid the water.

In the past, a city transportation engineer said that homeowners were over-watering their lawns and that there is no storm drain in the intersection but one isn’t needed. He also said the city did some pavement repairs in the intersection last June.

Can anything be done?

Sherman Oaks

Dear Judy:

You should report this problem to the city’s Bureau of Street Services at (800) 996-2489, said Reed at the city Public Works Department. The bureau handles inquiries on services, such as street and sidewalk repairs, tree trimmings and the installation and replacement of street signs.
