The New Short Fiction Series, billed as “L.A.’s only live literary magazine,” presents “The Baby Can Sing” and other stories by Judith Slater at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lankershim Arts Center, 5108 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood.

Slater was winner of the 1998 Mary McCarthy Prize in short fiction.

Featured Tuesday will be spoken word artist Sally Shore plus guest performers David Bickford, Amy Payne and Mark Rickard. $10. (323) 662-7900.
