Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Trout were stocked in both reservoirs this week, but the heat drove them deep. They’re biting only early. Those throwing trout-pattern swim-baits in the upper lake are fooling an occasional striped bass.

PYRAMID LAKE--No report.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass and catfish are the best bets, since trout have gone deep. A 9-pound 8-ounce bass was caught on a RoboWorm. Use mackerel for catfish.

LAKE PIRU--Bass are biting occasionally on night crawlers and spinnerbaits at the north end. Fishing is spotty.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout are still holding deep at the dam, biting on Needlefish, Power Bait and night crawlers. Red-ear perch are biting night crawler pieces at the flats.

Orange County

IRVINE LAKE--Trout are going deep to cooler water, but are still biting on Power Bait and night crawlers. Catfish, crappies and bass are biting sporadically.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are biting early and late on mackerel and shrimp. A 7-8 bass was caught on a spinnerbait. Some trout and bluegills.

OSO RESERVOIR--No major changes. The bass bite is great on deep-running crankbaits and catfish are getting active.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The lake closes for maintenance at 11 p.m. Sunday and will not reopen till next winter. Catfish will be biting through Sunday.

ANAHEIM LAKE--Opens Thursday after a plant of 12,000 pounds of catfish.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--No report.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--A 7-13 trout was caught on a gold Thomas Buoyant. The bite is fair to good.

JESS RANCH LAKES--A 4-2 trout caught on rainbow Power Bait trout tops the list. Trout and catfish are biting.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--The catfish bite is the best thing going, although crappies and bluegills are showing on hooks. The lake received 500 four-inch Florida-strain bluegills this week, which will eventually boost that fishery.

LAKE PERRIS--Big bass are the big news. A 17-2 lunker was caught by Bob Branch, Moreno Valley, on a plastic worm. A 13-2 bass was caught by Scott Bice, Moreno Valley, On a crawdad. One 11-4 was also caught. Trout are biting early on Power Bait and Sierra Gold.

LAKE SKINNER--A balloon and wine festival resulted in no fishing this week.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout are the best bet. One 5-4 caught on chartreuse Power Bait tops the list. Bass, crappies and bullhead catfish are active too.

LAKE POWAY--Catfish and bass are the best bets but fishing is slow. Trout are deep.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan and San Vicente are the best bets for bass. The bluegill bites at Lower Otay and SV are down, but fair. Crappies are biting at Hodges and trout at Miramar.

Eastern Sierra

In the Bishop area, Bishop Creek is the best bet but North Lake and Intake II are producing well on Roostertail lures and olive bugger flies. In the Mammoth Lakes area, Crowley and Convict lakes remain the best bets, although Rock Creek Lake is a good choice too. A 6-pound trout was caught on a frog-pattern Needlefish at Convict. The Upper Owens River is good on a variety of flies. On the June Lake Loop, a 4-9 rainbow as caught on Power Bait at Gull. Overall, limits are common at all lakes on the loop. Fly fishermen using Royal Wulff and green-body mosquitoes are doing well in afternoons. At Bridgeport, action at the reservoir has slowed but a 6-pounder was caught on a night crawler. The East Walker River flow has dropped and fishing is excellent on Rapalas mornings and evenings, and blue-wing olives for fly fishermen. Nymphs size 20-16 are working very well. Virginia Lakes is a good choice too.
