The City Council voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to pay Councilman John M. Gullixson as much as $35,000 to compensate him for the money he spent defending himself in a lawsuit brought against him by City Manager Arthur C. Simonian.

Simonian sued Gullixson last month claiming the councilman violated his right to privacy by giving reporters documents related to the city’s investigation of him. Simonian, who is expected to resign this week, was embroiled in a legal battle with the city, which was suing him to recover as much as $500,000 in bonuses he allegedly paid himself without proper authorization. Simonian had denied any wrongdoing and was suing to get his job back. All legal matters were ended Tuesday, when the council approved a $231,000 settlement with Simonian.
