Smith’s Bomb Silences Rockers

Katie Smith made a three-point shot with seven-tenths of a second left in overtime Saturday to give the Minnesota Lynx a 60-57 victory over the Cleveland Rockers in front of 6,655 at Cleveland.

Cleveland’s Rushia Brown tried to steal the pass from Andrea Lloyd Curry and missed, leaving the Lynx’s leading scorer wide open on the right wing.

Smith, second in the WNBA in scoring with a 22.3-point average, finished with 15 points on three-of-nine shooting. She scored a career-high 34 points in Minnesota’s 73-62 season-opening victory over the Rockers on May 31.

This time, Betty Lennox scored a career-high 28 points to lead Minnesota.

Houston 93, Indiana 67--Tina Thompson scored 23 points as the three-time defending WNBA champion Comets routed the expansion Fever before 12,152 at Houston.

Cynthia Cooper added 19 points and Sheryl Swoopes had 16 for the Comets, who improved to a league-best 11-2 with their fifth consecutive home victory.

Orlando 69, Charlotte 68--Taj McWilliams made a layup with 10.1 seconds to play in front of 6,803 at Orlando, Fla., lifting the Miracle into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

Charlotte’s Andrea Stinson missed a 15-foot jumper with seven-tenths of a second remaining.

Washington 76, Detroit 70--Vicky Bullett had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Mystics before 8,266 at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Phoenix 67, Miami 44--Tonya Edwards scored 12 points and Jennifer Gillom added 10 as the Mercury routed the expansion Sol in front of 8,005 at Miami.
