Heat and Dry Brush Fuel 2 Small Fires

County firefighters on Sunday battled two minor brush fires fueled by dry grass and high temperatures.

In the first blaze, about 30 acres on a ranch north of Moorpark were scorched. A homeowner using a tractor to clear brush accidentally ignited a fire when a tractor blade hit a rock, fire officials said.

The brush fire, which broke out about 11:30 a.m., spread quickly as it burned through dried vegetation, but was fully contained by 2 p.m.

“It just goes to show you how volatile the brush and grass are,” said Sandi Webb, spokeswoman for the Ventura County Fire Department. “It doesn’t take much to get something going.”

The second blaze broke out about 3 p.m. in a grove of avocado trees in Moorpark Home Acres.

The fire, which burned about one-third of an acre, was fed by dry grass and duff beneath the trees. It was contained within a half an hour.

Fire officials were unsure whether any trees were damaged or what ignited the small blaze.
