Express King Beats Tailor Fit by Nose
Tailor Fit, the 7-10 favorite, didn’t break sharply, but didn’t seem to have any excuses at the end in finishing second to Express King in the $163,795 Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap for quarter horses at Los Alamitos Saturday night.
Express King, who races for Ed Allred, the owner of the Orange County track, won by a nose over Tailor Fit, the 1999 world champion who was making his first Los Alamitos appearance since winning the Champion of Champions in December. Another nose back was Bono Jazz who finished a neck ahead of fourth-place On Reflection.
Express King, running 400 yards in 19.67 seconds, paid $23.60 for $2. The Childers was the 4-year-old gelding’s seventh win in 23 starts. Express King, has won both of his starts this year, after winning only two of 11 races as a 3-year-old.
The Childers was part of California Breeders’ Championship Night, in which state-breds raced for $1 million in purses .
