TODAY’S FEATURED MATCHES

Seeds in parentheses:

MEN

* Pete Sampras (1), United States: Has won Wimbledon six of past seven years. Has a 46-1 record during that span, with only loss to 1996 champion Richard Krajicek. Bids for 13th Grand Slam title, which would break record he shares with Roy Emerson.

* Andre Agassi (2), United States: 1992 champion, 1999 runner-up to Sampras and winner of three of past five Grand Slam tournaments. Since winning Australian Open in January, has had a series of injuries and has lost to Francisco Clavet, Hicham Arazi, Dominik Hrbaty and Karol Kucera.

* Lleyton Hewitt (7), Australia: At 19, has the most tournament titles on ATP tour this year with four. Also has best winning percentage with a 41-8 record. Reached third round in his only appearance at Wimbledon last year. Excellent service return makes him a threat.

* Tim Henman (8), Britain: Bidding to become first Brit to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. Lost in quarterfinals in 1996-97 and in semifinals in 1998-99. Serve-and-volley game is well-suited to grass, but lost both of his matches in two grass-court warmup tournaments.

* Mark Philippoussis (10), Australia: Big serve makes him a threat on grass. Has reached quarterfinals the past two years. Upset Sampras in first round at French Open.

* Richard Krajicek (11), Netherlands: 1996 champion and only player to beat Sampras at Wimbledon since 1992. Has won four of his past five matches against Sampras. Fragile knees have a better chance of holding up on grass.

WOMEN

* Martina Hingis (1), Switzerland: Won Wimbledon at 16 in 1997. Was upset in first round last year by Jelena Dokic. Still only 19, bids for her sixth Grand Slam title.

* Lindsay Davenport (2): Had never reached semifinals until last year, when she beat seven-time champion Steffi Graf in final. Has won three Grand Slam titles, all since September 1998. Has played only four matches since April because of ankle and back injuries.

* Mary Pierce (3), France: Two weeks ago became first Frenchwoman since Francoise Durr in 1967 to win French Open. Has had her worst Grand Slam results at Wimbledon, reaching quarterfinals in 1996 only.

* Venus Williams (5): Turned 20 on June 17 and still seeks her first Grand Slam title. Has reached Wimbledon quarterfinals the past two years. Has played in three tournaments since being sidelined six months because of tendinitis in both wrists.

* Serena Williams (8): Lost in third round of only Wimbledon appearance in 1998. Reigning U.S. Open champion would not face her sister until semifinals.

* Conchita Martinez (4), Spain: The 1994 Wimbledon champion has lost in the third round the last three years at the All England Club, but in 2000 she has reached the finals at the French Open and semifinals at the Australian Open.
