Navy Site Proposed as Off-Leash Dog Park

Dog lovers are considering converting a 10-acre site owned by the Navy into San Pedro’s first official off-leash dog park.

In the last few months, organizers of Peninsula Dog Parks, along with representative from Los Angeles City Councilman Rudy Svorinich’s office and the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, have been studying a lot on Western Avenue to decide whether it could accommodate a parking lot and separate areas for small and large dogs.

Though the city of Los Angeles is expected to lease the land from the Navy, dog owners would have to provide most of the money to build and maintain it.

Dog lovers will sell candy and organize a “doggie wash” April 16 to raise some of the $200,000 needed for irrigation, trees, benches, tables and sanitation equipment.

Other fund-raisers will include an event April 19 at which owners can have their pets professionally photographed. Information is available from Peninsula Dog Parks Inc. at (310)-514-0338.
