‘Pippi’ Books on Display at Library

Share

Pippi Longstocking books in 10 languages are on display at the Ojai Library through the end of the month, a collection on loan from Ojai resident Barbo Drott Huth.

The books, by children’s author Astrid Lindgren, tell the story of a redheaded, athletic girl who believes her father is a South Seas cannibal king. Huth, who grew up in Sweden near Lindgren, has collected more than 40 of the writer’s books.

Lindgren has written more than 80 children’s books and is best known for unconventional characters, said Julie Albright, children’s librarian at Ojai Library.

Pippi’s penchant for untidiness and wearing mismatched stockings brought Lindgren condemnation from authorities for promoting a permissive upbringing, Albright said. But Lindgren defended the right of children to be treated like human beings, she said.

The library is at 111 E. Ojai Ave. For more information, call 646-9901.
