County Trio Setting Fast Pace at Fresno

Three former county athletes are making names for themselves on the women’s equestrian team at Fresno State.

Junior Heather Hogancamp, who attended Mater Dei, finished second recently in intermediate horsemanship I at the Western Show at Cal Poly Pomona and qualified for competition in the advanced section in Western events. She is also a member of the Fresno State marching band.

Senior Barbie Wiborg competes in the Western and English events. This season she has a first-place finish in the advanced walk/trot/canter competition at Stanford and a third-place finish at a competition in Fresno. She attended La Habra High. A former volleyball player, she joined the Bulldog equestrian team in the middle of the 1998 season.

Former Sunny Hills swimmer Megan Wagner, a freshman, is also competing on the team this season.

The Bulldogs are in their fourth season of equestrian competition and ride against schools such as Cal State Bakersfield, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Reedley College, Stanford and UC Davis. In the fall the Fresno State equestrian team earned overall high-point team honors in English at Stanford and twice in competitions held on their home course. The Western riders attained the reserve high-point team honors at San Luis Obispo.

Three former Cypress College standouts are off to good startswith their respective four-year colleges.

Brandon Pack, a catcher/outfielder from Esperanza, is batting .340 at South Carolina, which has been rated as high as 12th in the nation. He has four home runs and 16 runs batted in.

Shaun Larkin, a second baseman from La Quinta, is batting .370 with 22 RBI and 24 runs at Texas Tech.

Brandon Smith, a designated hitter from Canyon, is at Kansas, where he has a .315 batting average and has driven in 18 runs and scored 14.

Former Los Alamitos forward Christa Ellis received honorable mention status from the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. for her efforts with the Cal State Los Angeles women’s basketball team, which finished 7-17. The 5-11 junior led the Golden Eagles in scoring (12.4 points) and also averaged six rebounds. She had team bests in free throws made (82) and attempted (105) and free-throw percentage (78.1%).

Kristen Marquis of San Juan Capistrano, a freshman on the Texas diving team, won the three-meter springboard championship at the Big 12 Conference meet in College Station, Texas, recently. She finished third in the one-meter springboard competition.

Kris Hulgren of Fountain Valley, a junior defender on the Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team, was selected to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation academic all-conference team. Hulgren, from Mater Dei High, has a 3.02 grade-point average.
