Heat Ends the Pacers’ Home Winning Streak

The one-two punch of Miami’s Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway knocked out Indiana’s franchise-record 25-game home winning streak Sunday.

Mourning scored 35 points and Hardaway 22, including six in crucial part of the fourth quarter when Indiana was mounting a charge, as the Heat defeated the Pacers, 105-96.

For Mourning, who was 13 for 18 from the field, it was the 76th consecutive game in which he was double figures and the seventh time this season he has had 30 or more points. He had four blocked shots, raising his team-record to 927.

The loss in the showdown between the Eastern Conference leaders was Indiana’s first in Conseco Fieldhouse since Nov. 25 and cut the Pacers’ lead over Miami to 3 1/2 games in the battle to earn homecourt advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

Portland 102, Washington 86--The Trail Blazers improved to 6-1 this season on the second night of back-to-back games on the road against Eastern Conference teams, and they did it with another balanced performance.

Six Trail Blazers scored in double figures, with Damon Stoudamire the leader with 16 points. Nine players played at least 18 minutes, but no one played more than 32. Arvydas Sabonis had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Reserves Greg Anthony (15 points) and Bonzi Wells (14) shot a combined 11 for 15 from the field.

Toronto 99, Seattle 97--Vince Carter scored 13 of his game-high 34 points in the first quarter as the Raptors raced to a 17-point lead and held off the SuperSonics for their first win at Seattle.

The SuperSonics, without injured second-leading scorer Vin Baker (calf), got 28 points from second-year forward Rashard Lewis and 22 from Gary Payton.

New York 93, San Antonio 80--Latrell Sprewell scored 24 points, Patrick Ewing 21 and Allan Houston 20 as the Knicks beat the Spurs in their first visit to Madison Square Garden since winning the title there in Game 5 of the NBA finals.

New Jersey 129, Orlando 91--Johnny Newman came off the bench to score a season-high 26 points and lead the Nets over the Magic at East Rutherford, N.J. It was the third win in a row for the Nets and stopped an Orlando winning streak at three.

Boston 93, Philadelphia 77--Antoine Walker scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds despite playing on an sore foot that sidelined him early in the game as the the Celtics beat the 76ers at Boston. Paul Pierce added 29 points.

Milwaukee 103, Cleveland 72--Tim Thomas scored 22 points, and Ray Allen and Sam Cassell each added 18 as the Bucks beat the Cavaliers at Milwaukee.

George McCloud of the Denver Nuggets and Ron Mercer of the Orlando Magic each were suspended without pay for one game and fined $5,000 for engaging in an altercation outside the Denver locker room after their game Saturday night. . . . Seattle Coach Paul Westphal and Toronto Coach Butch Carter chose not to wear a microphone, as required by new NBA guidelines, and each team could be fined $100,000. . . . Michael Jordan, Washington’s president of basketball operations, hasn’t attended a game since the trading deadline Feb. 24. . . . The Knicks’ Marcus Camby, out because of a bad knee, had his recovery slowed by flu.
