Carroll Triumphs Indoors
Porchea Carroll of Rio Mesa High won the girls’ long jump (18-3 3/4) and placed fifth in the 60-meter dash (career-best 7.56) in the Nike Indoor Classic track and field meet at the University of Indiana on Sunday.
In other events, Chadd Smith of Camarillo placed fourth in the boys’ high jump (6-6 1/4) and Anita Siraki of Hoover finished fifth in the girls’ two-mile (10:43.83).
* McKenzie Evans, who finished seventh in the girls’ 300 low hurdles in the Class 4A final of the Missouri state championships last year, has withdrawn from Birmingham High to move back to Missouri.
BASKETBALL
* Forward Sheila Penn, an All-Mission League girls’ player for Notre Dame High last season, has transferred to Claremont, Coach Keith Case said.
VOLLEYBALL
* Lori Chandler has resigned as girls’ coach at El Camino Real. She will be replaced by Aimee Sturges. Chandler, a graduate of El Camino Real, will continue to coach the girls’ basketball team.
MOTORSPORTS
* Tom Stansberry of Bakersfield won the season-opening sprint car main event, which was shortened from 30 to 20 laps, Saturday at Ventura Raceway.
Mike Furlong of Thousand Oaks won the 20-lap International Motor Contest Assn. modified main event and John Uccellini of Lancaster won the 20-lap street stock main.
