Bollinger, Monarchs Advance in Arizona

Mater Dei’s Tia Bollinger pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts Friday night in the Monarchs’ 1-0 victory over Fairfield in the quarterfinals of the Mojave tournament in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Locked in a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the sixth, Mater Dei (8-0) scratched for the game’s only run. Sheila McCorkle beat out a bunt single and advanced to second on Casey Phillips’ sacrifice. She reached third on a passed ball and scored when Fairfield catcher Lisa Abbott’s attempted pick-off sailed into left field.

Fairfield sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell struck out 10.

In an earlier second-round game, Bollinger had a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Mater Dei (8-0) beat Phoenix Chaparral High, 2-0. The Monarchs had 10 hits, five of which went for extra bases.

In other tournament games:

Foothill 3, Tucson (Ariz.) Sahuaro 2 (10)--Trailing by one in the bottom of the eighth, with two outs, and down to her last strike, Foothill’s Erin Mobley hit a home run, keeping her team in the game. In the bottom of the 10th, Tiffany Haas singled in Autumn Champion giving Foothill (4-0) the victory.

Fountain Valley 2, Clovis 1 (9)--Natalie King struck out 16 for Fountain Valley. Tiffany Miller scored the winning run on a ground-ball single by Kristin Crowder.

Farmington (N.M.) 2, Pacifica 0--The Mariners (2-2-1) managed only one hit against last year’s New Mexico state player of the year Piper Marten of Farmington. Marten, who had 32 strikeouts in her first two tournament games, added to the total by striking out 13 Mariners. Pacifica’s only hit came in the top of the seventh when Angie Ortega singled to the left of third.
