Mater Dei’s Bollinger Shuts Down Sonora

Tia Bollinger struck out eight and allowed four hits to help top-ranked Mater Dei to a 2-0 victory over Sonora in nonleague softball Tuesday.

Bollinger leads the county with 164 strikeouts in 12 games.

The visiting Monarchs (12-0) scored an unearned run in the third inning and Sheila McCorkle hit a home run in the sixth inning.

In other nonleague games:

No. 5 Kennedy 3, No. 10 Rosary 0--Sophomore Michelle Turner came on to pitch in the fourth inning and didn’t allow a hit in four innings of relief to get the victory for visiting Kennedy (6-1).

Brethren Christian 18, Bolsa Grande 5 (5, mercy)--Danielle Hall had a grand slam and triple with six RBIs for visiting Brethren Christian (1-4).

Corona del Mar 3, Newport Harbor 2--Alissa Zoelle struck out three en route to a complete game, and Mijanou Phan drove in two runs for Newport Harbor (3-5).

El Dorado 1, Troy 0--Lauren Gallardo scored when teammate Rashelle Pacork was hit by a pitch in the third inning with the bases loaded, and Kristen Karanzias pitched a complete game with four strikeouts for the visiting Golden Hawks (4-3).

Fullerton 1, Savanna 0--Right fielder Courtney Crosley doubled, reached third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch for the game’s only run at Fullerton (5-3). Katie Hall (3-1) got the victory and Joanna Gray picked up her first save.

Savanna is 6-3.

Los Alamitos 2, Cypress 1 (14 innings)--Tracie Tippett tripled with one out in the top of the 14th inning and scored n a passed ball to give Los Alamitos (6-4) the first run of the game. Merissa Hearn then singled, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a Kristin Crenshaw’s sacrifice fly.

Griffin pitcher Lynsey Farina threw all 14 innings to pick up her third victory this season.

No. 6 Marina 2, Villa Park 0--Steffany Stenglein (5-0) pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 batters and walking two batters for visiting Marina (7-1).

St. Margaret’s 6, Laguna Beach 5--With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Katie Massrey singled in Katie Conklin from second with the tying run and Monique Kettler, scored the winning run for St. Margaret’s (4-5) when the shortstop threw over the catcher’s head attempting to throw out Conklin.

Tartan pitcher Rachel Stoddard improved to 3-1, giving up five hits and striking out five batters.

In the Garden Grove:

No. 4 Pacifica 9, Santiago 0--Sophomore Jessica Marical threw a perfect game, striking out 14 of the 21 she faced as she improved her record to 3-1 for host Pacifica (4-4-1, 1-0). The defending league champion Mariners received two hits and two RBIs from freshman center fielder Jodie Legaspi.

Rancho Alamitos 2, Los Amigos 0--Wyndy Nichols and Jennifer Basile each had a bases-loaded single to drive in runs in the top of the seventh inning to give Rancho Alamitos (7-2, 1-0) the victory.

Valencia 7, Katella 1--Michelle Whiteman pitched a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts the host Tigers (4-4).

Katella (1-7-1) scored in the second inning on a dropped third strike and throwing error.

Kary Valdez had three hits for Valencia.
