A grand slam by Dane Sardinha triggered Pepperdine’s 7-6 nonconference victory over UCLA on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves (30-19) withstood 13 UCLA hits--including former Alemany High outfielder Bill Scott’s 18th home run. Damon Katz, the Waves’ second baseman, came on in relief with none out and two on base in the ninth and notched his third save.

Sardinha hit the grand slam in the third inning off freshman left-hander Mike Kunes to erase a 2-0 Bruin lead.

Scott’s home run in the seventh tied the score, 5-5, but Pepperdine answered in the bottom of the inning when Sardinha’s RBI single off the wall in right field scored Woody Cliffords.

The Waves extended the lead to 7-5 in the eighth and UCLA (28-21) scored once in the ninth before Katz got Forrest Johnson to pop up with two on and two out.

Steve Schenewerk of Pepperdine surrendered 12 hits in four innings but left with a 5-4 lead. The Bruins managed only one more hit against Matt Wersel, Noah Lowry and Katz.

Danny Garcia and Katz each had two hits for the Waves. Scott had three hits for UCLA.
