Riordan Challenges School Board

Share

In a speech to Realtors, Mayor Richard Riordan on Thursday challenged the Los Angeles school board to hire a superintendent who is unafraid to fire incompetent administrators and teachers.

“We need a school board that will hire a superintendent and back that superintendent,” said Riordan, who last year helped a new majority get elected to the panel. “The superintendent must have the backbone to use the ‘F’ word, and the F word is fire people who fail children.”

The panel is slated to pick a new superintendent this summer.

The event, held at the Odyssey restaurant in Granada Hills, was Riordan’s seventh “State of the Valley” address to the Southland Regional Assn. of Realtors, whose members sell property in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.

Now in his final year as mayor, Riordan reflected on his accomplishments in office but also talked about his vision for the city’s future. He urged strong support of education reform and urged the expansion of express bus service throughout the city.

A group of residents attended the session to protest the reopening of Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Granada Hills, which Riordan has supported.
