Pacifica Fires Boys’ Basketball Coach Becker

Bob Becker, who coached the Pacifica High boys’ basketball team to three undefeated seasons in the Garden Grove League, has been fired, Principal John Johnson said.
Johnson would not say why he fired Becker, citing personnel regulations. However, he denied that parental pressure played any role in the decision.
“This has nothing to do with any parent concerns or complaints,” Johnson said.
Johnson said he became aware of an issue several weeks ago and, after an investigation, decided to dismiss Becker.
Becker did not return a call seeking comment.
In seven seasons under Becker, the Mariners went 137-65 overall and 70-16 in the Garden Grove League. The Mariners did not lose a league game in 1993-94, 1997-98 and 1998-99. In Becker’s first season, 1993-94, Pacifica won its first Southern Section title in boys’ basketball and advanced to the Division III state championship game.
The Mariners went 13-15 last season, including 8-4 in league, and lost in the Southern Section Division II-A quarterfinals.
