Foothill Football Coach Leaves for Fullerton College

Casey Mazzotta has stepped down as football coach at Foothill High and will take a job as an assistant at Fullerton College, he said Friday.

Mazzotta, who played at Tustin High and Brigham Young, said he will coach the secondary for the Hornets and also teach physical education full-time at the college.

Mazzotta’s teams at Foothill went 8-13 in two seasons, making the playoffs but losing in the first round to Tustin in 1998.

BADMINTON

The first California community college women’s badminton championships take place this weekend at Irvine Valley College.

Competition in singles and doubles begins at 10 a.m. today. The singles final is scheduled for noon Sunday and the doubles final at 1 p.m.

Julie Hanks, who coaches the Irvine Valley women’s basketball team, is seeded fourth in singles. She became a student at the school this semester and recently won the Orange Empire Conference singles title in badminton.

Irvine Valley’s Jacqueline Myers and Kathleen Lee are seeded No. 3 in doubles.

SOFTBALL

Coaches Sue Hall of Kennedy High and Lisa Baker of Irvine will coach the North-South All-Star Game presented by Soroptimist International of Brea/La Habra.

The game, to be played June 6 at Brea Olinda High, begins at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children.

SWIMMING

UC Irvine swimmer Kawika Tarayao and Anteater life skills coordinator Khari Johnson are scheduled to participate in the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., May 28-June 1. Tarayao, a graduate of Corona del Mar High, is one of 353 students selected nationwide to attend the fourth annual conference, which provides leadership training for athletes.

Johnson will be a facilitator at the event.

SOCCER

Irvine High has hired Peter Duynstee to coach its boys’ team, Athletic Director Erik Terry announced. Duynstee, Irvine’s junior varsity coach the last two years, replaces Rich Breza, who led the Vaqueros to the Sea View League title last year.

* Corona del Mar has hired Pat Callaghan as its boys’ coach, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said. Callaghan, who has been an assistant at Orange Coast College and Huntington Beach the last two years, will replace Scott Dameron.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

UC Irvine will honor 136 student-athletes as Big West Conference scholar-athletes at a banquet at the Student Center on Monday.

Since 1984, Irvine has had 1,770 scholar-athletes selected.

Seniors Shannon Anders (basketball) and Genai Kerr (water polo) were named UCI’s Big West scholar-athletes of the year. Each conference school honors one male and female athlete.

Anders led the conference in free-throw percentage, setting a school record at 84.1%.
