Green Finally Wins by Edging Karvasek
It had been more than a year since Jeff Green had been to victory lane in the NASCAR Super Stock division at Irwindale Speedway. But Saturday night, he held off the man with the most wins, T.K. Karvasek, to win the 40-lap race before a crowd of 5,601.
Green, of Long Beach, had won two early races in 1999 but none since. He and Karvasek battled throughout the race. Karvasek, of North Hills, lost the lead on lap 20 and Green pulled in front on the ensuing laps and won by 1.127 seconds.
James Weston of Goleta, who didn’t win a race last year, held off Todd Burns of Riverside in the closing laps to win his third NASCAR Late Model of the season.
With two laps to go in the race, Mike Haney blew a motor, bringing out a caution. On the restart, Burns tucked behind Weston to make his bid for the lead. As the two cars entered Turn 2, he dove low but as he came out of the turn and into the backstretch, Burns got sideways. He saved the car but lost second place to David Hessing of Canyon Country. Weston pulled away for the victory.
