Ram Quarterback Warner OK After Appendectomy

Super Bowl most valuable player Kurt Warner had an emergency appendectomy Tuesday.

The quarterback was in good condition after the operation, which took about an hour, the St. Louis Rams said.

“He’s not in any pain right now,” his wife, Brenda, said. “He’s eating clear fluids right now. He had some Jell-O. He’s doing fine.”

She said her husband was up and walking around Tuesday evening.

Ram Coach Mike Martz said Warner’s status for next week’s minicamp is undetermined.

Defense lawyers expect a jury to be chosen by Friday in the murder trial of Ray Lewis, the Baltimore Raven linebacker accused of murder. Lewis and two friends, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, are charged in the Jan. 31 stabbing deaths of Jacinth “Shorty” Baker, 21, and Richard Lollar, 24, during a brawl after a Super Bowl party. . . . Rae Carruth’s $237,000 home may be sold and his NFL retirement account liquidated to pay child support for his 6-month-old son, Chancellor Adams, whose mother Cherica died soon after she gave birth to the boy. Carruth and three others are accused of plotting a Nov. 16 drive-by shooting of Cherica Adams.

Beau Ortmayer, son of former Packer assistant coach Steve Ortmayer, claims in a lawsuit that two Green Bay police officers violated his civil rights by using excessive force in an arrest at Lambeau Field that left him with a concussion. Ortmayer is seeking $5 million in damages from the city of Green Bay and officers William Galvin and Todd Leider. . . . Trequaill Stackhouse, 22, was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to assault in a fight in October that injured several Syracuse University football players.

Avenger quarterback Todd Marinovich was not arraigned in Culver City Municipal Court as scheduled. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has not yet filed charges against Marinovich, 30, who was arrested April 25 on suspicion of sexual assault.

Tennis

Pete Sampras, slowed by back and thigh injuries, played his first match in more than a month and defeated Chris Woodruff, 6-4, 7-6 (5), advancing to the second round of the German Open at Hamburg. Patrick Rafter of Australia, struggling to come back after a shoulder injury, lost to Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-4, 7-5. It was Rafter’s second consecutive first-round loss.

Lindsay Davenport, who regained the top ranking two days ago, defeated Elena Dementieva of Russia, 6-3, 6-2, in her opening match in the Italian Open at Rome.

An Arsenal fan was stabbed as British and Turkish soccer fans clashed outside bars on a downtown Copenhagen square early today, hours before the UEFA Cup final between Galatasaray of Turkey and the English club.

Eight people in all were injured, including a British fan who sustained a head wound and a police officer. Four Britons and four Turks were arrested, police said after the hourlong melee was brought under control.

The game has been classified as high risk by soccer officials, partly because of fears that British hooligans may try to avenge the killing of two English fans last month on the eve of Leeds’ first-leg semifinal in Istanbul against Galatasaray.

A man walked into a Little League baseball park in Ozark, Ala., and shot his ex-wife and her boyfriend to death in front of hundreds of children and their parents, police said. The alleged gunman then shot and critically wounded himself. The shooter used a 12-gauge shotgun and fired 10 shots at the victims, WFSA-TV reported. When the shotgun jammed, he pulled out a .22-caliber pistol and shot himself.

A Scottish government minister wants Mike Tyson barred from Britain for a proposed fight in Glasgow next month. The former heavyweight champion has applied for a visa to fight Lou Saverese on June 24. Jackie Baillie, Scotland’s deputy communities minister, said Tyson should not be allowed back. Tyson, who served three years for a rape conviction, was cleared to enter the country in January, despite a law that bars entry to anyone who has served a jail sentence of a year or more. Tyson knocked out Julius Francis in Manchester, England.

Almost four years after the Atlanta Olympics ended, the IOC said it would continue an investigation into alleged wrongdoing in the city’s successful bid for the 1996 Games. The body’s ethics commission said it wanted to take a further look at the behavior of one IOC member, which it did not identify, over allegations of excessive hospitality by Atlanta’s bid directors.

Jarvis and Jonas Hayes, identical twins who played key basketball roles last season for Western Carolina as freshmen, are transferring to Georgia. . . . Steve Belko, who coached basketball at Idaho State and Oregon and was a former commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, died Friday in a Boise, Idaho, hospital. He was 84. . . . Craig Stadler withdrew from this week’s Colonial tournament in Fort Worth.
