Around the League

Commissioner Bud Selig is still considering options in in a proposed realignment plan for 2001, according to a major league official, and has canceled an owners meeting tentatively scheduled for June 13-14 in Detroit, at which a vote on realignment was to be taken. The meeting probably will be rescheduled after the July All-Star break, the official said. . . . Pat Burrell, the top pick in the 1998 amateur draft, was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies. . . . Stanley George “Frenchy” Bordagaray, the Brooklyn Dodger who revived the mustache in major league baseball in 1935, has died in Ventura. He was 90. Though mustaches were common in the 1890s, the last player to wear one regularly had been Philadelphia Athletics catcher Wally Schang in 1914. After Bordagaray, it was three decades before a player wore facial hair regularly in the majors.
