A Manhattan Beach middle school cafeteria worker was arrested as she left the campus with packets of methamphetamines, apparently for sale, police said Wednesday.

Shirley Hilty, 42, of Hawthorne who had worked at the school for five years, was arrested Tuesday afternoon, said Redondo Beach Police Sgt. Phil Keenan.

Police did not name the school.

Redondo police began tracking Hilty and the investigation took them to Manhattan Beach, police said.

Sources told police Hilty was selling methamphetamine in the school parking lot. She was arrested with 17 packages of the drug in her car and some amount on her, Keenan said.

The investigation is continuing to determine if schoolchildren were solicited or exposed to the illicit drug.

She was released on $20,000 bail.

She will be arraigned June 12.
