The St. Louis Cardinals activated former Dodger reliever Scott Radinsky from the disabled list Saturday, putting former Angel reliever Mike James on the 15-day list to make room for him.

Radinsky has been sidelined since last July with a strained left elbow, while James has a strained right shoulder.

Radinsky had missed 47 games before Saturday. Manager Tony La Russa said Radinsky was available to pitch Saturday against the Mets, but didn’t in his team’s 12-8 loss.

Radinsky had a 2-1 record with three saves and a 4.88 earned-run average last season.

Against Florida on Thursday, James lasted only one-third of an inning, surrendering back-to-back home runs in relief of starter Rick Ankiel.

James is 0-1 with a 4.80 ERA and has given up six home runs in 15 innings.

San Diego left-handed pitcher Sterling Hitchcock was diagnosed with a mild strain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Hitchcock, who injured himself Friday night against the Expos, will be reevaluated in a couple of days and probably will go on the 15-day disabled list.

Colorado outfielder Larry Walker threw for the first time since going on the disabled list 16 days ago with an injured right elbow.

The Cincinnati Reds paid tribute to one of the team’s most popular players, retiring Tony Perez’s No. 24 jersey.

Perez, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 23, saw his oversized, replica jersey unveiled on the left-field wall along with the five others retired by the Reds--manager Fred Hutchinson (No. 1), Hall of Famers Frank Robinson (20), Johnny Bench (5) and Joe Morgan (8), and slugger Ted Kluszewski (18).
