Once Again, Sacramento Is Record Capital

The statisticians in the Cal State Sacramento press box had seen it before. For the third consecutive season, Hornet Stadium was the scene for a record-setting performance.

Sacramento defeated Northridge, 64-61, to set an NCAA Division I record of 125 points and tied a Division I record with 18 touchdowns. The game broke a 20-year-old record as the highest-scoring Division I game.

Charles Roberts of Sacramento moved from ninth to fifth among NCAA career rushers, raising his Division I-AA total to 6,366 yards, only 31 shy of the Division I record held by Ron Dayne, former Heisman Trophy winner for Wisconsin.

As the numbers piled up, researchers perused the record books, trying to put it all in perspective.

“We’ve been through this before,” said Brian Berger, Sacramento’s sports information director.

Last season, Roberts rushed for a I-AA record 409 yards against Idaho State. Two years ago, Bashir Levingston of Eastern Washington set an NCAA record by returning three kickoff returns for touchdowns. Levingston, now a member of the New York Giants, also set an NCAA record with 326 return yards.
