Miami Gets No Peace from BCS Puzzle

Miami defensive tackle Matt Walters stared at the latest bowl championship series rankings, analyzing Miami’s position in each poll and trying to figure out what the Hurricanes need to happen to move into one of the top two spots.

Walters, like many of his teammates, is learning more and more about the BCS every day. Even Coach Butch Davis is studying the system for the first time.

Miami has to, especially since beating two of the top teams in the country--Florida State and Virginia Tech--and being ranked second in both major polls might not be enough to get the Hurricanes into the BCS championship game.

“It’s getting kind of interesting,” Walters said. “The BCS was a good attempt to do something other than the polls, but right now it doesn’t look like it’s the best idea. I’d be really disappointed if we won out and didn’t play for national title. But we’ll see. Hopefully, it will take care of itself.

“Who knows? It might work out.”

Clemson quarterback Woody Dantzler will have left ankle surgery after the season.

Tiger Coach Tommy Bowden said Dantzler, who had an MRI on Tuesday, has tendinitis. But Bowden says the condition should not keep the quarterback from playing against South Carolina on Nov. 18 and in a bowl game.

Dantzler, a junior, has played about one half of each of the past three games. He bruised his lower left leg against North Carolina on Oct. 21.

He has only 48 yards rushing and 235 yards passing the past three weeks.

Boston College quarterback Tim Hasselbeck will sit out Saturday’s game at Notre Dame because of a sprained right knee, Coach Tom O’Brien said.

Hasselbeck, a senior, sprained his medial collateral ligament in last week’s 31-3 victory over Temple. He’ll be replaced by sophomore Brian St. Pierre when the Eagles visit the 11th-ranked Fighting Irish.
