Lehman, Waldorf Will Play in Team Matches

Tom Lehman and Duffy Waldorf have been added to the PGA Tour field of the Hyundai Team Matches next month at Pelican Hill, leaving space for one more team in the field.

The matches, to be played Dec. 15-17, feature four teams from each of the three major U.S. tours competing in three separate match-play tournaments.

Defending champions Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia and Phil Mickelson and Rocco Mediate had previously committed to play.

Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper will defend their title in the LPGA division against Annika Sorenstam and Lori Kane, Meg Mallon and Beth Daniel, and Grace Park and Kelli Kuehne.

The Senior PGA Tour field is: defending champions Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, Gary McCord and John Jacobs, Allen Doyle and Dana Quigley, and Bruce Fleisher and David Graham.

LEE HEADED FOR UCI

Stella Lee of Irvine High has signed with UC Irvine, Vaquero Coach Gary DeBeaubien said Tuesday.

Lee, an honorable mention All-American selection by the AJGA this year, was a Times’ all-county selection in 1999 and averaged just under 36 for nine holes this season.

Lee is the first player to sign with the Anteaters, who will begin play in the 2001-2002 season.

DRIVE, CHIP, PUTT, WIN

Billy Olsen, 12, of Fountain Valley, won the 11-12-year-old division of the national Drive, Chip and Putt junior golf skills competition Saturday at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Olsen defeated 14 others in his age group in a contest based on driving distance, proximity to the hole on chips and the number of putts required to make seven- and 20-foot putts.

SCHOLARSHIP EXPANDED

The Toshiba Senior Classic Scholarship fund has been expanded to include seven schools in the Newport-Mesa and Irvine school districts.

One student each from Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Estancia, Irvine, Newport Harbor, University and Woodbridge high schools will receive a $2,500 grant and a computer. Applications are available in the counseling departments of each school.

LOCALS WIN

A team from Anaheim Hills Golf Course, led by professional Scott Stubbs, won the Women’s Public Links of Southern California Pro-Member tournament Monday at Western Hills. Midge Moyer, Tomoko Billman and Marian Showalter teamed with Stubbs for the championship. Stubbs, who shot 71, had the low score among professionals. . . .

Ahmad Bateman of Huntington Beach shot one-under-par 71 and Pat Burke of Coto de Caza shot 72 in the first round of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament’s second stage Tuesday at Oak Valley in Beaumont. Bateman is in 18th place, Burke is 25th. . . .

Justin Boatman of Aliso Viejo, playing the second stage at Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, shot 77 and is in 62nd place. . . . Neale Smith of Tustin, playing the second stage at Bear Lakes in West Palm Beach, Fla., shot one-over-par 73 and is in 34th place. The top 23 players from each site advance to the final stage Nov. 29-Dec. 4 at PGA West in La Quinta. . . . Ray Carrasco of Irvine survived the first stage of Senior PGA Tour qualifying last weekend, shooting 79-72-72-76--300 to finish tied for ninth and advance to the finals Nov. 28-Dec. 1 at Walt Disney World Resort. Hank Woodrome of Brea shot 80-74-75-74--303 and missed a spot in the finals by one stroke. He is an alternate. . . .

Phil Degnan, 51, had played golf nearly 30 years without making a hole in one. On Nov. 4 the San Juan Capistrano resident made his second one in a week. Degnan aced the 210-yard, No. 5 hole at Pacific Golf Club’s Royal Lytham that day with a 5-wood. On Oct. 28 he holed a 7-iron on the 134-yard seventh hole on the same course. “The first one I was pretty calm,” said Degnan, who carries a 12.2 index. “But the second one I could have won the Olympic high jump I jumped so high.”
