Police Believe 5-Year-Old Girl Was Slain

The death of a 5-year-old girl at an Anaheim grocery store Thursday is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said.

Police said they were alerted about 3 p.m. after a man walked into a Food 4 Less store in the 100 block of North Beach Boulevard seeking help for a child he was carrying. When officers arrived, they saw that the child was not breathing and took her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, said Mike Hidalgo, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department.

“Apparently they saw something on the body that made them suspicious” about the cause and circumstances of the child’s death, Hidalgo said.

The man, identified as a relative of the child but not her father, was taken to the police station, where he was being questioned late Thursday. His name was not released.

The child’s identity also was being withheld until other relatives are notified.
