Ellis Beats Buzzer to Lift Valley in Double Overtime

DaMarcus Ellis took an inbounds pass with 3.7 seconds remaining and went the length of the court for the game-winning layup as time expired in the second overtime to lift Valley College over Pasadena, 79-77, in the first round of the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament on Thursday night.

Clarence Jones of Pasadena (1-2) tied the score, 77-77, with five seconds remaining by stealing an inbounds pass and making an 18-foot jump shot.

Michael Crawford scored 25 points for Valley (3-1), Nate Wilson contributed 18 points and Ellis finished with 16 points and nine assists.

Franklin Temple had 25 points and 19 rebounds for the Lancers.

In other men’s basketball games:

Foothill 112, Ventura 111--Fred Adjwanu’s free throw with 15 seconds to play in the second overtime period was the difference in the first round of the Porterville tournament.

Desmond Penigar of Ventura (2-2) had 44 points and 20 rebounds, and Foothill’s Luke-Arthur Vebobe had 42 points.

Canyons 71, Riverside 69--Jerome Edwards rebound and free throw with one second to play helped the Cougars (2-1) survive in the first round of the Irvine Valley tournament.

Nana Gbewonyo had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Canyons.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 77, San Diego Mesa 48--Monica Hang scored 12 points for Ventura (2-2) in the first round of the Glendale tournament.

Santa Ana 72, Canyons 66--Briana Kentfield had 23 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots for Canyons (1-1) in the first round of the Glendale tournament.

Valley 59, Reedley 58--Tynisha Howze scored the winning layup with 3.7 seconds left in the first round of the Merced tournament.

Michelle Tompkins led Valley with 29 points and Howze had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
