Get-Acquainted Period Starts for Pahlsson

Samuel Pahlsson didn’t get much of a chance to make an impression on his new team. After all, he traveled cross-country from Boston to Anaheim, arriving mere hours before the Ducks’ 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

Today’s practice will give Pahlsson, acquired Saturday from the Boston Bruins for winger Andrei Nazarov and defenseman Patrick Traverse, a chance to show what he can do. It also will give the Ducks a better opportunity to see where Pahlsson, a 22-year-old rookie forward from Sweden, will fit in.

Besides, there was no way Coach Craig Hartsburg was about to alter his lineup after the Ducks’ hammered the Phoenix Coyotes, 6-2, Saturday. Pahlsson will have to play his way into the lineup.

“I was surprised,” Pahlsson said of the trade. “I was not prepared for it at all. Now, I’m here and that’s the way it is in this league.”

Pahlsson had one goal and one assist in 17 games for the Bruins, which was the main reason they traded the rookie.

“I had only 17 games there and I wasn’t good enough, I guess,” he said. “I hope it’s going to go better here. . . . It was hard adjusting [to the NHL]. I’m still learning. It’s a big difference from Europe. It takes time to learn it. I don’t have it perfect yet.”

Hartsburg kept all-star wingers Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne on separate lines Sunday. Kariya played with center German Titov and right wing Marty McInnis and Selanne joined left wing Mike Leclerc and center Matt Cullen.

Those combinations don’t figure to change while center Steve Rucchin recovers from a broken nose and cheekbone that will keep him out up to three weeks.
