SOFTBALL

* Catcher Lacey Smale of Flintridge Sacred Heart has signed with Santa Clara.

Smale, a two-time All-Southern Section selection who batted .469 as a junior, will play first base for the Broncos.

VOLLEYBALL

* Melissa Plass, a junior setter, and Stacy Rowenhorst, a sophomore outside hitter, of Pepperdine have been selected to the All-West Coast Conference team.

Jennifer Fopma, a sophomore middle blocker, and Kate Taylor, a junior middle blocker, of the Waves were selected to the second team.

Conference champion Santa Clara swept the honors, with Ynez Carrasco selected player of the year and defender of the year, Becky Potter chosen freshman of the year and Jon Wallace coach of the year.

* Nicole Stuka, a 5-11 outside hitter at Hart, has committed to Delaware. She also considered Manhattan and Central Connecticut.

MOTOR SPORTS

* Phil Geibler, 21, of Oxnard, one of two drivers awarded Valvoline Team USA scholarships by Championship Auto Racing Teams to compete in the Euro Formula Palmer Audi series, clinched the series championship Sunday at Brands Hatch, England, by winning the fourth and final race of the series from the pole.

Geibler finished third and sixth in the first two rounds, held at Snetterton, England, Nov. 12, and was second in the third-round race, also held Sunday at Brands Hatch.

“I didn’t expect to come here and get a win, two pole positions and lift the championship title,” Geibler said. “The racing here has been really, really tough and the competition had been hard, but that makes me feel all the better about winning this championship.”

Geibler was clocked at 101.64 mph on the eighth lap of the 14-lap fourth-round race.

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura closed the Sprint Car Racing Assn. season Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway with a victory in the 50-lap Jack Kindoll Classic.

Troy Rutherford of Ojai was second.
