Canyons Passes Hancock on Winn’s Scoring Throw

Jason d’Autremont scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Travis Winn with 12:05 remaining and College of the Canyons defeated Hancock, 21-14, in a Western State Conference Northern Division game Saturday at Canyons.

Steve Smith scored the Cougars’ first touchdown on a 78-yard run midway through the second quarter and Cedric Thompson put Canyons (4-0, 2-0 in WSC play) ahead, 14-0, on a 51-yard punt return with 6:05 remaining in the first half.

Smith ran for 106 in 16 carries and d’Autremont caught six passes for 69 yards. Winn completed five of 10 passes for 83 yards and one interception, and David Parker completed four of 15 for 20 yards and two interceptions.

After forcing Hancock to punt, Canyons took over on its own 35-yard line with 2:47 left and gained two first downs to run out the clock.

Canyons, ranked ninth in the

state, sacked Ryan Canfield seven times for minus-39 yards, and held the Bulldogs to seven yards rushing in the first half.

Canyons committed three turnovers in the third quarter, and fifth-ranked Hancock converted two into touchdowns to tie the score, 14-14.

John Harrison of Canyons tackled Andrea Nickelson for an 11-yard loss on fourth and goal on the Cougars’ five-yard line with 22 seconds left in the third quarter to preserve the tie.

Hancock (3-1, 1-1) drove to the Cougars’ 14-yard line late in the first half, but Billy Barbaree missed a 30-yard field goal. Barbaree also missed on a 47-yarder midway through the fourth quarter.
