Mangrello’s Goal Lifts Irvine, 1-0

Melody Mangrello scored her first goal of the season Sunday to give UC Irvine a 1-0 victory over Long Beach State in a Big West Conference women’s soccer game at Long Beach.

Robyn Piotrowski centered the ball to Mangrello, who scored from 15 yards in the 11th minute.

Long Beach had a chance to tie it in the 88th minute on two consecutive shots. Marissa Barragan’s shot from 12 yards was stopped by Irvine goalkeeper Allison Merrick, and a rebound shot by Lacy Brown sailed over the goal. Merrick finished with five saves for Irvine (6-3-2, 1-1 in conference).

Hannah Cochrun, formerly of Mission Viejo High, combined with Jihan Elgazzar for 10 saves for Long Beach (3-7-1, 0-2).

In another Big West game:

Pacific 2, Cal State Fullerton 1--Abbie Partch scored the game-winner in the 87th minute for host Pacific (7-3-1, 2-0). Kim Houg tied the score, 1-1, on a penalty kick in the 60th minute for Fullerton (5-7, 1-1).

In the Clemson/Nike men’s soccer invitational:

Clemson 5, Cal State Fullerton 1--Art Ramirez scored for Fullerton (6-4), ranked 20th in the nation. No. 11 Clemson (7-2) got two goals each from Mark Lisi and Fabio Tambosi.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 3, Centenary 0--Irvine recorded its fifth shutout, and freshman Roger Davanger had two goals and an assist. Junior Ilia Nazarov scored and Tyler Reid had three saves for host Irvine (7-3).
