Westminster Fends Off Santa Ana

Share

Christian Chamberlain’s 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, followed by Obet Martinez’s two-point conversion run on a broken play, propelled previously winless Westminster to an 8-7 Golden West League victory over Santa Ana on Thursday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Santa Ana had a chance to win the game late after moving to the Westminster 43. But on fourth down, Lion linebacker Paul Bauer sacked quarterback Roger Martinez with eight seconds remaining to preserve the victory.

The Lions (1-4-1, 1-0), who are averaging just over seven points per game and were shut out in three of their first four games, marched 71 yards in 10 plays after the second-half kickoff to account for their only points.

Chamberlain’s touchdown came when Westminster Coach Ted McMullen elected to go for it on fourth and goal at the one. Then Martinez, holding for kicker Jaren Jenkins on the conversion, reached up for an errant snap and raced into the end zone for two points.

Santa Ana (0-6, 0-1), which gave up nearly 40 points per game to its first five opponents, delivered its best game of the year defensively, allowing the Lions 246 yards on offense.

Santa Ana took a 7-0 lead early in the game on a one-yard run by quarterback Gildardo Sanchez, capping a 37-yard drive set up by Luis Bustamante’s 28-yard interception return. But the Saints’ offense sputtered the rest of the night, as Westminster gave up only 113 yards in offense.
