Evenson’s a Joy for Troy in Win Over Sunny Hills

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Paul Evenson put up solid numbers Friday night.

The burly fullback rushed for 177 yards in 28 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead Troy over Sunny Hills, 25-0, in a Freeway League game at Fullerton High.

Evenson’s bruising runs dictated the offensive tone for Troy (5-2, 1-1 in league). He pushed, pulled and bulldozed his way through the Lancer defense with punishing runs, eating up the clock and wearing down Sunny Hills’ defenders as he went.

“He’s a very good running back. He was dragging guys three or four yards down the field every time,” Sunny Hills Coach David Fenstermaker said. “They must have run 70 plays and he probably had half of them. That just wore our guys out.”

Evenson’s domination, coupled with a strong defensive effort by Troy, resulted in Sunny Hills’ 15th consecutive defeat. The Lancers are 0-7, 0-2. Sunny Hills was limited to four second-half possessions.

Troy’s defense set up the game’s first score. A Jordan Oliver punt pinned Sunny Hills at its nine-yard line. Three plays later, Ryan Mansfield’s punt was blocked by Tom Osborn. Andrew Serrato recovered in the end zone to give Troy a 6-0 first-quarter lead.

Neither offense could sustain a drive until midway through the second quarter. Troy advanced 61 yards in 13 plays with Oliver’s 14-yard run the longest gain. Evenson, who gained 33 yards on the drive, capped it with a one-yard scoring burst.

Jordan McCarthy scored on an eight-yard run and Evenson scored from four yards out in the second half.
