Avila Runs for 274 Yards; Eagles Hold on for Victory

Calvary Chapel running back Andy Avila rushed for 274 yards in 20 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Eagles held off Brethren Christian for a 21-17 Olympic League victory Saturday at Clark Field in Lakewood.

With 3 1/2 minutes left in the game, Brethren Christian drove to the Calvary Chapel 20-yard line, but was stopped there with less than a minute to play.

Brethren Christian’s Leon Green returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Kyle Painter ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Calvary Chapel (5-2, 2-0 in league) tied the score with 5 minutes 42 seconds left in the first quarter when Justin Calas scored on a one-yard run and added a two-point conversion. With 2:41 left in the first quarter, Avila scored on a 56-yard run to put the Eagles in front for good, 14-8.

Avila scored his second touchdown on an 18-yard run with 2:51 left in the first half. But Brethren Christian (1-5-1, 0-2) cut the deficit to 21-15 when James Dingman caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Painter with five seconds left in the half.

Avila had 220 yards in 11 carries in the first half, in which the Eagles had 267 yards in total offense. The teams combined for five turnovers in the first half and eight for the game.

The only score in the second half came with 7:08 left in the third quarter when a bad snap sailed over Calvary Chapel punter Nick Lindsay’s head and went through the end zone for a safety.

Green led the Warriors’ rushing attack with 61 yards in 15 carries. Painter was 15 of 38 for 155 yards with three interceptions.
