Fullerton Golfers Take First-Round Lead

Fullerton golfers Hye Yoon Jung and Grace Lee each shot 82 to help the Hornets take the first-round lead in the Orange Empire Conference women’s golf championships Wednesday at El Toro.

Annie Chung (86) and Han Hyun (89) also broke 90 as Fullerton posted a team score of 339 for a lead of 20 shots over second-place Cypress on the par-72 course.

Rusamee Gulyanamitta shot a 74 to lead Cypress. Karlie Ward shot 84 for third-place Saddleback (366), and Maricela Dietrick’s 88 helped Orange Coast (383) take fourth.

Sixth-place Golden West (392) got an 88 from Jennifer Surface. Mayumi Ebihara (88) led Irvine Valley, which finished at 385.

The championships resume with the second round on Monday.

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, Saddleback 0--Grace Boyd had 15 kills and Natalie Snowden 11 for the Rustlers (12-0, 7-0), who won their 77th consecutive match, 15-7, 15-7, 15-2. Saddleback (10-5, 4-3) was the last team to defeat Golden West, in 1997.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s water polo:

Golden West 14, Fullerton 6--Logan Shaw scored three goals in a 68-second stretch of the first quarter as Golden West jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Shaw finished with five goals and Michael McDay had four for Golden West (25-2, 6-0). Kareem Captan scored twice for Fullerton (12-6, 3-3).

Orange Coast 11, Cypress 7--The Pirates scored four goals in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Christopher Lancellotti led Orange Coast (13-10, 4-2) with four goals. Tri Nguyen had four goals for Cypress (0-6, 5-19-10).

Saddleback 22, Santa Ana 18--Jonny Geiger scored seven goals for Saddleback, which overcame a 12-9 halftime deficit. The visiting Gauchos (6-16, 2-4) also got five goals from Ryan McMillan and four from Ennio Rocca. Sergio Gonzalez scored six goals and Fernando Garcia added four for Santa Ana (3-10, 1-6).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo:

Orange Coast 9, Cypress 2--Daylene Coberly, Neisha Hoagland and Kristina Miloslavic each scored two goals for Orange Coast.
